Job description:

Summary

Under the general direction of the Municipal Division Operations Director, the Cross-Connection Control Inspector / Backflow Tester conducts inspections at client and water user facilities to prevent backflow or back-siphonage of potential contaminants and pollutants into the potable water system. This position is also responsible for conducting testing of backflow prevention assemblies at client and water customer locations to ensure compliance with state and local regulations. Up to 80% overnight travel to client communities may be required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Inspect businesses, residential homes, commercial and industrial establishments, and other types of buildings and operations governed by state and local cross-connection control regulations.
  • Inspect water inlets and points of use, advising water consumers of necessary protective devices that must be installed and/or properly maintained.
  • Conduct follow-up inspections to verify that backflow prevention assemblies have been professionally installed, maintained, and tested as required.
  • Perform testing and documentation of backflow prevention assemblies to confirm compliance with applicable regulations.
  • Manage daily client communications, data collection, and reporting related to inspections and testing activities.
  • Maintain inspection reports and notices using computerized systems and databases.
  • Coordinate inspection and testing schedules to meet quality and productivity expectations.
  • Provide excellent internal and external customer service through professional, courteous, and timely communication and high-quality work.
  • Recommend and lead efforts to improve processes, quality, and client satisfaction.

Skills and Core Competencies

  • Knowledge of Massachusetts state and local Cross-Connection Control Guidelines and Plumbing Code.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing and water distribution systems.
  • Ability to resolve client and water user issues and respond to technical inquiries efficiently.
  • Understanding of mechanical principles related to fluid dynamics and hydraulics.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints, piping diagrams, and engineering drawings.
  • Proficiency with electronic devices, tablets, and application software for data entry and reporting.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality with proprietary and sensitive information.
  • Ability to perform responsibilities safely, efficiently, and independently.
  • Strong analytical, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Professional demeanor when interacting with clients, property owners, and team members.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • None

Education and/or Experience

  • Minimum two (2) years of field experience in cross-connection control inspections and backflow prevention preferred.
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in the plumbing industry, backflow prevention assembly testing, or water distribution system operation.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Massachusetts DEP certified Backflow Prevention Tester, Cross Connection Surveyor and current Combination Certification.

  • Starting Salary: $25.00 – $30.00 per hour depending on experience and qualifications
