Gary, “The Backflow Nerd,” McLaren here, out and about.
Today, I want to talk about three things that you can do to better prepare for your next sanitary survey.
As we know, sanitary surveys are a requirement—minimum of every three years regardless of state regulations. That’s an EPA requirement.
Now what does vary is the regulations from state to state on cross-connection control. The common denominator is that unprotected threat, that inherent hydraulic problem of backflow occurs throughout public water systems. It’s probably not going to go away anytime soon, but with a cross-connection control program in place, we can be rest assured and compliant.
So what does that look like? You can prepare this way.
First, have a written cross connection control program. That’s your policies and procedures. Have that written down, in a digital version at the ready.
Second, have detailed cross-connection control records and backflow prevention test records on hand, but don’t stop there.
Lastly, have evidence or record of your ongoing cross-connection surveying, hazard assessment, or inspection activities to preemptively detect unprotected hazards and cause the building owners to eliminate them. That’s really the cycle of a good cross connection control program.
If you demonstrate those three things during your next sanitary survey, we’re confident you’ll be more compliant than ever.
