The Backflow Minute: Backflow Preventer Testing vs. Cross-Connection Surveys

Transcript

Hey, folks! Gary, “the Backflow Nerd,” McLaren here.

That’s Michigan’s largest cross-connection, the Mackinac Bridge. It’s over 5 miles long, and it spans between the Upper Peninsula and the Lower Peninsula, allowing millions of people each year to travel between those two peninsulas.

Now, much like a backflow preventer assembly, that bridge gets inspected annually by 10 engineers, typically in July, and it takes 3 weeks.

Backflow preventer assemblies typically require annual testing, but a cross-connection survey or inspection or assessment is a different sort of activity. That is a verification of backflow preventers where they are required by plumbing code and where they are necessary to protect our water supply from backflow contamination.
