Water Meter Installer/Tester – Lower Michigan

TRAINING PAY OF $23 PER HOUR FOR FIRST 90 DAYS, THEN INCREASE UP TO $25 PER HOUR BASED ON PERFORMANCE. WITH OVERTIME AND AUTO ALLOWANCE, THE AVERAGE METER INSTALLER GROSSES APPROXIMATELY $65K THEIR FIRST YEAR OF EMPLOYMENT.

Summary

Under the general direction of the Meter Division Director, the Water Meter Tester/Installer conducts testing of various water meters utilizing a meter testing device to determine accurate functionality of the water meters. When not performing meter testing responsibilities, the Water Meter Tester/Installer performs meter exchange responsibilities consisting of removing old residential and commercial water meters and installing new electronic water meters according to the specifications of the Municipal contract. Some of these specifications may include the exchange and/or rewiring of water meter transmitters as well. Up to 80% overnight travel to client communities may be required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Completes work as required by testing contract or assigned by Lead Installer.
  • Logs meter flow rates and calculates accuracy.
  • Provides results to client in clear and concise format.
  • Installs new residential and commercial water meters, fittings, and gaskets.
  • Verifies water meters are installed in the correct direction, no leaks are present, and the transmitter is activated.
  • Records old and new water meter readings.
  • Installs new wire per specifications within the project scope or when directed by management.
  • Activation and verification of proper installation and transmission of new meter data by utilizing table PC or smartphone.
  • Captures all required photos applicable to the project.
  • Logs and completes account data at the time of appointment.
  • Coordinates installation scheduling and meets quality, quantity, and safety requirements.
  • Manages daily communications, data, and reporting concerning installations.
  • Upon assignment to a new location, returns any inventory and supplies required for existing location.
  • Provides for excellence in internal and external customer service. Create a positive experience for customers through professional and courteous behavior and producing high quality results.
  • Recommends efforts to improve existing processes, quality or client satisfaction.

Skills and Core Competencies

  • Working knowledge of test meter device.
  • Ability to understand and interpret different meter flows for testing.
  • Understanding of different types of meters and testing requirements.
  • Working knowledge of plumbing and water distribution systems.
  • Ability to resolve client and water user issues and answer technical questions in a timely and responsive manner as needed.
  • Knowledge of basic mechanical concepts pertaining to fluid dynamics.
  • Ability to interpret blueprints and engineering drawings.
  • Strong ability to use electronic equipment and application software as required.
  • Ability to create and maintain highest levels of confidentiality when dealing with proprietary information and sensitive situations.
  • Ability to fulfill job responsibilities in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong analytical ability.
