The Backflow Minute: What’s the Difference Between Cross-Connection Control & Backflow Prevention?

Transcript

Gary “The Backflow Nerd” McLaren here at HydroCorp.

I want to take a minute and talk about a question that came up in a recent webinar, and the question was this: cross-connection control or backflow prevention, what’s the difference?

So let’s keep it simple. Those two terms, cross-connection control and backflow prevention really work hand in hand.

Here’s how they’re different: Cross-connection control, we can think of as an umbrella. The ongoing efforts, functions, activities, and results that shield our systems, our potable water—drinking water—supplies from the threat of backflow. It’s an inherent hydraulic problem.

When we talk about backflow prevention or backflow preventers, those are the physical things that are required in plumbing codes, although they vary from state to state. But these are the physical things installed in our plumbing systems or at service connections that protect our drinking water from backflow.

I’m Gary McLaren with HydroCorp, and I’ll see you next time on The Backflow Minute.
