Check Your Valve(s)
It’s possible during meter replacement, for an older or damaged water shutoff valve to break. This is most common when the homeowner hasn’t maintained the shutoff valves in the home. A good rule of thumb to keep in mind is that if your valves at the water meter should be replaced every 20-25 years, as part of proper home maintenance. The water has been flowing through those valves for over twenty years eroding away at the valve and its internal working parts. We are finding an ever-growing number of valves failing, even though they may look in good shape on the outside. Prior to scheduling the installation of your new water meter, it is highly recommended the property owner makes sure the shutoff valves are working properly. If the valve is not functioning properly, repairs should be made prior to the installation appointment. If the valve breaks during meter replacement, repairs are the homeowner’s responsibility, not the contractor’s nor the city’s.
